Melingriffith Wheel

Melingriffith Wheel draws on the industrial past of the Taff Trail and the story of Melingriffith — a place transformed by the tinplate works that grew a small hamlet into a thriving, busy town.

Layers of reclaimed fabric are brought together through patchwork and hand stitching. Some have been dyed with rust, allowing the marks and colours of corrosion to become part of the piece - a quiet echo of the machinery, metal and industry that once defined this landscape.

Other sections are screen printed with original maps and archival documents, using oak-gall and iron ink to create a deep sense of history held within the place.

Found fragments of rubber, collected along the Taff Trail, are incorporated into the composition, giving discarded materials another life.

A tactile piece of textile history, Melingriffith Wheel brings together landscape, industry and found materials to tell a story of the Taff's past.
